It’s all in the planning

November 17, 2009

We have been planning our master bath remodel for months. When we finally decided that it was time to get rid of the carpet in the bathroom (yes, really); the tiny white cracked tiles that frame the wall and floor; and all of the dated, shiny brass fixtures, we didn’t realize the thinking that would be involved.

First: choosing a contractor. Sounds simple enough. We saw three contractors. And every time one of them left, I had more questions than answers, as each of them had their own ideas of what should be done. What we shouldn’t do. And as much as I appreciated their opinion, it was very confusing. In the end, we went with the guy who listened to what WE wanted.

Second: choosing the tile (and the design). You wouldn’t think that choosing the pattern would be a big deal, but think about it: It’s not like painting, you just can’t say “Ah…nope. That doesn’t work. Take it down. Start over.” We spent weeks skimming magazines (sitting on the cold floor by the magazine rack at Home Depot), searching for ideas online, and visiting showrooms, before finally settling on the pattern for the tile design AND then choosing the actual tile (which in itself was crazy!).  This is important stuff. See what happens when designs are NOT well planned?

Design Disaster

Poor planning...can mean disaster

Third: Budget. Now, we had an idea of what it cost to put this thing together. But when you get started, somehow the project snowballs. IF you’re replacing the faucets, you KNOW you have to buy matching toilet paper holder. And the toilet paper holder must match the towel rack…and now the bathroom will be beige, not blue, so none of our towels match. All of our accessories – candles, etc — are out. The trash can is not going to work…And so on….

Tomorrow is demolition day. With all my planning, what could possibly go wrong?  Ready, set ….GO!!! Wish me luck.

First, second, ….fourth? What was third?!?!? 😉
If the bathroom turns out anything like your office or your half-bath, it’s going to be gorgeous!!!!

Thanks Wendy! It took me forever to decide on what pattern to use for the tile; what color of tile; what color for the walls; what type of faucet …the list is endless…
